Jazz from Gallery Podcast - Interview with Carmelo Muriel

Jazz is truly a universal language, and I recently had the opportunity to record a conversation with Carmelo Muriel, a marvelous saxophonist / flautist and composer living in Cadiz, Spain.  His artistic approach combines the elements of Jazz improvisation with the rhythms and harmonies of traditional Spanish Flamenco into something that is genuinely and uniquely creative.  His most recent recording is called "El Jardin de las Naranjas" on which one will  hear a piece based on the rhythm of the pasodoble, the  tango ,the rondena,  or the solea. Carmelo  is joined on the recording by guitarist Nono Garcia, drummer Juan Sainz, and bassist Piet Verbist forming the nucleus of his quartet which is augmented on by the strings of Carmen Jurado and Pedro Domenech and adding a true Flamenco flare you will also hear Kuki Santiago and David Gavira clapping their hands and tapping their feet in the most creative way.  (Conversation recorded: Sunday 29 April 2012).

Posting Podcasts, Again...!!!!

We have begun making new podcasts available again, with this month's posting of an excerpt from an interview recorded with guitarist Mike Moreno, who along with drummer Kendrick Scott, singer Julie Hardy, and trombonist Nick Vayenas is a core member of the New York based music collective and record label known as World Culture Music. It’s been less than a year since recording this telephone conversation with Mike, as well as individual interviews with both Kendrick and Julie which I will share with you later. Mike and Kendrick have known each other for quite a while, both having grown up and ultimately attending together the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston Texas. A high school with an incredible music program closely rivaling those in many universities. Mike Moreno is a guitarist with a uniquely genuine style. His CD on World Culture Music called “Between The Lines” is a collection of 8 of his wonderfully creative compositions. Follow the links on our home page to subscribe to our monthly podcasts.
