THERE'S A NEW SEGMENT ON THE PROGRAM CALLED "THE JAZZ FROM GALLERY 41 JAZZIZZAZZIZZ ACTUALITY BYTEZZ" WHERE I GIVE YOU A PEEK INTO MY PERSONAL ARCHIVE OF CONVERSATIONS THAT I'VE RECORDED OVER THE PAST 4 PLUS DECADES WITH MANY OF THE GREAT MASTERS OF THE MUSIC.
ON THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM THE SEGMENT FOCUSES ON DRUMMER ALBERT "TOOTIE" HEATH. I'LL SHARE WITH YOU COMMENTS TAKEN FROM A CONVERSATION TOOTIE AND I HAD IN THE LATE 1970'S.
WE TALKED FOR QUITE A WHILE AND THE CONVERSATION BEGAN WITH MY ASKING TOOTIE WHAT IT WAS LIKE GROWING UP IN SUCH A REMARKABLE MUSICAL FAMILY. IN THE 3 MINUTES OR SO IT TOOK HIM TO ANSWER HE COVERED EVERYTHING FROM HIS FIRST INSTRUMENT THAT HE PLAYED WAS TROMBONE TO HIS FIRST SET OF DRUMS TO WHAT HIS BROTHERS JIMMY AND PERCY WERE UP TO AND WOUND UP TALKING ABOUT ONE OF HIS FIRST GIGS AS A YOUNG DRUMMER THAT JUST HAPPENED TO BE WITH JOHN COLTRANE.
THE MUSIC DURING THE SEGMENT WILL INCLUDE RECORDINGS MADE BY ALL THREE OF THE HEATH BROTHERS AS WELL AS A COUPLE RECORDINGS TOOTIE IS ON WITH HERBIE HANCOCK AND ALSO THE HAROLD LAND / BLUE MITCHELL QUINTET.
JOIN ME THIS SATURDAY EVENING FROM 10 PM TO 2 AM (PT). IF YOU LIVE IN THE BAY AREA YOU CAN TUNE IN TO KCSM-FM91, OR ON THE STATION'S STREAM HEARD AROUND THE WORLD AT KCSM.ORG. JAZZ FROM GALLERY 41 AND ALL PROGRAMS ON KCSM ARE ARCHIVED ON SPINITRON FOR 2 WEEKS.
