New on Jazz from Gallery 41 this month, from Manfred Eicher's ECM label comes "Hommage à Eberhard Weber" that features Pat Metheny, Jan Garbarek, Gary Burton, Scott Colley, Danny Gottlieb, Paul McCandless and the SWR Big Band conducted by Helge Sunde and Michael Gibbs.
Drawn from jubilee concerts at Stuttgart's Theaterhaus to mark bassist Eberhard Weber's 75th birthday, "Hommage à Eberhard Weber" is a remarkable live album incorporating big band arrangements of Weber's compositions as well as captivating new music from old friends Pat Metheny and Jan Garbarek.
Eberhard Weber has been unable to play since experiencing a stroke in 2007, yet his spirit is deeply felt throughout, his sound is integral to the performance as well. The title track is a specially commissioned work by Metheny with whom Weber had first played and recorded with as far back as the 1970's. Metheny explains in the liner notes that "...I wanted to take the idea of sampling one step further by taking video elements of Eberhard improvising and then reorganize, chop, mix and orchestrate elements of those performances together into a new composition with a large projection of the Eberhard moments I had chosen filling a screen behind us as we performed".
