New recording from saxophonist Ralph Bowen on Posi-Tone Records
The new self-titled cd on Posi-Tone Records "Ralph Bowen" features the distinctively muscular tone of the saxophonist with a quartet that includes pianist Jim Ridl, bassist Kenny Davis and playing the drums is Cliff Almond. Except for 3 of the tracks composed by Kenny Davis, Davis Liebman and McCoy Tyner the remainder of the compositions are Ralph's including a 6 part suite called "The Phylogeny Suite" which MUST be listened to from beginning to end. Phylogeny is defined as 'the evolutionary history of organisms as depicted in a family tree' explaining the title of each of the 6 movements relating to "A Rookery Of Ravens", "A Leap Of Leopards", "A Pandemonium Of Parrots", "A Flamboyance Of Flamingos", "A Venue Of Vultures" and "A Cast Of Crabs". Perhaps Ralph has been influenced by the Steve Swallow school of song titles, and whether or not these particular titles make any sense to you at the moment....the music is as would be expected from Bowen, incredible! Add the cd to your library, give it a good listen, and it will all start to make sense to you, then listen to it again, and again....
