Jazz from Gallery 41 - New Releases

Tom Harrell/trumpet & flugelhorn explores new musical spaces and places with his terrific new release "Trip"on HighNote Records.  It's a quartet date on which he's joined by Mark Turner/tenor saxophone, Ugonna Okegwo/bass, Adam Cruz/drums.  There are 12 tracks in all, 7 of which are listed as though a suite called "The Adventures Of A Quixotic Character".  The piece called "Cycle" swings as hard as anything possibly could...all "Trip" as previously stated...terrific!

Trip

I'm guessing, at least I'm hopeful, that just about every note played at The Keystone Korner in San Francisco was recorded and thankfully some of those historical documents are now being shared with us.  Pianist Cedar Walton and his quartet were there for The Rahsaan Roland Kirk Memorial Jazz Festival that took place during the Christmas to New Year's holiday week and the performances on this disc are taken from December 29, 1977 to January 1, 1978.  Cedar's band included Bob Berg/saxophone, David Williams/bass, Billy Higgins/drums and they were also joined by Freddie Hubbard/trumpet.  This new release, also on HighNote Records, is appropriately called "Reliving The Moment".

Reliving the Moment

Two of the newest arrivals from Motema Music include:

"Time And Time Again" from the band collectively known as The Cookers.  Billy Harper/tenor saxophone, the trumpets of Eddie Henderson and David Weiss, Donald Harrison/alto saxophone, George Cables/piano, Cecil McBee/bass, Billy Hart/drums.

Time and Time Again, The Cookers

The Michael Carvin Experience "Flash Forward".  Drummer Michael Carvin new band is a quartet with Jansen Cinco/bass, Yayoi Ikawa/piano, Keith Loftis/saxophone.  It's a collection of Jazz classics written by Miles Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie and others all receiving a genuinely unique treatment under Michael Carvin's leadership.
