More terrific, creative, independently self-produced new releases

From time to time, more often than you might think, there are some real standouts among the new independently or self-produced cd's.  Here is a short list of only a few of them that deserve your attention.

The Puppeteers
Vibraphonist Bill Ware, pianist Arturo O'Farrill, bassist Alex Blake, and drummer Jaime Affoumado.  A quartet and a record label spawned during the history of the unfortunately now defunct Brooklyn club, Puppet's Jazz.

The Puppeteers

Guitarist, Composer, Arranger Yossi Tamim - One Movement
Yossi Tamim has composed genuinely unique and creative pieces for this collection.  The juxtaposition of the two quartets creates beautiful aural layers of color.

Along with Tamim:
Jim Ridl - piano
Tom DiCarlo - bass
Tim Horner - drums
Joyce Hammann - violin
Keats Dieffenback - violin
Liuh-Wen Ting - viola
Robert Burkhart - cello

Sam Boshnack - Exploding Syndrome (Shnack Music)
Trumpeter & Composer Samantha, she obviously prefers Sam Boshnack new cd wonderfully utilizes as she describes her group "...a beautiifully quirky, high-energy quintet...".

The other four members of her group:
Beth Fleenor - clarinets & voice
Dawn Clement - piano & keyboards
Isaac Castillo - bass
Max Wood - drums

Matt Wilson Quartet + John Medeski - Gathering Call
Released just this past January, on Palmetto Records, is the latest recording from drummer Matt Wilson and his Quartet (Jeff Lederer - reeds, Kirk Knuffke - cornet, Chris Lightcap -bass) augmented on this one by pianist John Medeski.  It swings and rolls in all the right places, the musicianship by everyone is nothing less than stellar.
